Dr. John R. Holsten, 84, of Spartanburg, SC, died Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born February 27, 1931, in Tulsa, OK, he was the son of the late Robert Henry and Adelaide Marjorie Hilliard Holsten, and husband of the late Vivian Catherine Mitchell Holsten. Dr. Holsten was formerly employed with Monsanto and Springs Industries as a research chemist. He received his PhD from Vanderbilt University where he was still an active alumni. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, active in Boy Scouting having received his Silver Beaver Award, and was a lifelong Scoutmaster. Surviving are his children, Cherie Holsten of Spartanburg, SC, Patricia P. Fulghum of Inman, SC, and Steven Randal Holsten of the home; grandsons, Bobby Perry of Spartanburg, SC and Mike Holsten of Chico, CA; and great-grandson, Zachary Luke Perry of Spartanburg, SC. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Holsten. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 PM Saturday, March 7, 2015, at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, 235 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29306. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 PM, at the Chapel, conducted by Bishop Casey T. Eichhorn. Burial will be in Westwood Memorial Gardens, 6101 Reidville Rd., Moore, SC 29369. The family is at their respective homes.
