Dr. Garren

Dr. William G. "Bill" Garren, 64, of Spartanburg, husband of Nancy Ruth Zeigler Garren, died Friday, July 17, 2009, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home after an extended illness. Dr. Garren was born October 17, 1944, in Spartanburg, SC, to the late Rolla V. and Grace Sullivan Garren. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1962. After a period of small business ownership in Savannah, GA, and Spartanburg, Bill attended Sherman College of Chiropractic, graduating in 1976. After graduation, Bill entered private practice with Dr. Don Thomas and, at the same time, became a professor at Sherman College. He retired from private practice and from Sherman College in 2007. Bill was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg and was devoted to his family, especially his wife, "Ruthie", and son Ashton. Throughout his life, Bill was an avid outdoorsman and an expert fly fisherman who was renowned for his talent and technique. He was most fond of fishing in fresh water lakes and streams throughout the Southeastern United States. In addition to his wife and son, Bill is survived by two sisters, Virginia Sakelaris and her husband Harry of Hendersonville, NC, and Ann Harvey of Spartanburg; and three brothers, Ronnie Garren and his wife Betty of Beaufort, SC, Michael Garren and his wife Sandie of Virginia Beach, VA, and Timothy Garren and his wife Barbara of McLean, VA. A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, July 19, 2009, in Davis Chapel at the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg conducted by the Rev. Dr. Donald J. Wilton and the Rev. Bill Adams. The family will receive friends following the memorial service at the Church.
