Dr. James Levi Duncan, Sr., 89, of Eden Terrace, formerly of 1060 Andrews Farm Road, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born April 21, 1920, in Carroll County, GA, he was the son of the late William D. and Jewel Johnson Duncan. A retired physician, he was a graduate of the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia with Honors AOA. He was a member of The American Academy of Family Physicians for 50 years, a founder and charter member of the SC Anesthesiologist Association for 50 years, a member of the Spartanburg County Medical Society, having served as a past president, and a member of the SC Medical Association where he was a former Board member. He was a past Chief of Staff for Spartanburg General Hospital and served on the Building Committee. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he served as a Captain and Physician in the 98th Medical Battalion. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg where he was an active Deacon for over 50 years and a member of the Bob Morgan Sunday School, serving as a Sunday School teacher for many years. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lena Lawson Duncan; two sons, Dr. James Levi Duncan, Jr. and his wife Joanne B. of Spartanburg, and Robert Lawson Duncan and his wife Hadley H. of Atlanta, GA; a daughter, Charlene Inclan and her husband Roberto M. of Spartanburg; a brother, Bobby Duncan and his wife Gaye of Clearwater, FL; four grandsons, James Levi Duncan, III, Paul Mark Inclan, Robert Charles Inclan, and Robert Lawson Duncan, Jr.; and four granddaughters, Jennifer B. Duncan, Molly Ann Inclan, Katherine Elizabeth Inclan, and Elizabeth Harriet Duncan. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, August 14, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kirk H. Neely and the Rev. Robert C. Morgan. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Honorary Escort will be members of the Spartanburg County Medical Society.
