Dr. David Regis Stoltz, died peacefully at his home in Spartanburg on October 24, 2013, the eve of his 88th birthday. Married for nearly 67 years to the late Louella Von Till Stoltz, who died on May 11, 2013, he is survived by their five children: Mary Ellen Bianco and her husband Sal, of New York City; David Stoltz, Jr., of Spartanburg; Nancy Stoltz and her husband Craig Corbitt, of Mill Valley, CA; Andrea Dunlevy and her husband Greg, of Plano, TX; and Dr. Peter Stoltz and his wife Dr. Brooke Stoltz, of Lexington, SC. His ten grandchildren were the joy of his life: his two New York City granddaughters, Anna Rose Bianco and Maria Louisa Bianco, spent more than ten summers with "Dr. Grandpa and Grandma Lou" at "Camp Spartanburg." He was a kind and loving grandfather to them all -- Jessica Dunlevy Henning and her husband Jake, Rebecca Dunlevy, Caroline Corbitt, Lindsey Stoltz, Tyler Stoltz, Kara Dunlevy, Courtney Stoltz, and Shelby Stoltz. The youngest of five children of Andrew and Anastasia Garahan Stoltz, he was born in Altoona, PA, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1949 from Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, PA, and was awarded a Doctor of Dental Surgery in 1953 from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School, Philadelphia. He was a decorated veteran of World War II and the Korean War. After graduating from dental school, he served for two years as a Dental Officer in the United States Navy Medical Service Corps, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and moved from there to Spartanburg in 1955, where he practiced until his retirement in 2000. Dr. Stoltz began his professional practice as a dentist in Spartanburg in 1955, and served on various state dental committees. A former president of the Piedmont Regional District Dental Association of South Carolina, he was designated a Fellow by the Academy of General Dentistry in 1979. He was also instrumental in making dental care available to underprivileged children in the state. Dr. Stoltz served as the team dentist for the Wofford Terriers for many years, and was honored in November 2000 for his forty-four years of service as a staff dentist at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. He was a member of the Spartanburg Rotary Club. Also a member of the Men's Garden Club, he took great pleasure in the cultivation of fruit trees, berries, and vegetables at his beloved farm on Lewis Chapel Road after his retirement. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, where he served for more than 50 years as an usher, choir member, lector, and reader. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. A former president of the Spartanburg Little Theatre, he performed in more than 40 plays and musicals over the years. His debut was in "The Teahouse of the August Moon" in 1956. Other notable roles and productions included "Fiddler on the Roof," "Hello Dolly," Sky Masterson in "Guys and Dolls," "The Sound of Music," Daddy Warbucks in "Annie," Herbie in "Gypsy," and Herr Schultz in "Cabaret." All five of his children joined him in various productions between 1956 and 1972. He was also a founding member of the Goodfellows' Follies, a musical comedy revue that supported holiday food baskets for the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, which ran from 1959 through the late 1970s, and was revived for several years in the late nineties. To help commemorate Spartanburg's significant role during the country's bi-centennial celebration in 1976, he joined with Al Willis and others to create an innovative Greek Chorus Presentation of "Seven Steps to Freedom," which portrayed key South Carolina characters' roles in the American Revolution. He enjoyed the companionship and support of a wonderful team of caregivers: Hazel Wannamaker, Karen McCollum, Betty Lokuji, and Nelson Demetriou, who, with Wanda Griffin, his friend and co-worker for over 37 years, were an integral part of his daily life. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Saturday, October 26, 2013, and from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, October 27, 2013, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Funeral Mass will be offered at 12:00 noon on Monday, October 28, 2013, at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 161 North Dean St., Spartanburg, SC 29302. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. The family will receive guests afterwards at their home.
