Dr. James "Jim" William Carter, 61, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 11, 2017, while surrounded by his loving wife and children. Born May 5, 1955, in Elberton, GA, he was the son of Mary Helen Brooks Carter of Hartwell, GA and the late William Oscar Carter. Dr. Carter was an emergency room physician at Mary Black Memorial Hospital for 25 years. He was a graduate of Hart County High School, the University of Georgia, and the Medical College of Georgia. He completed a Family Practice Residency at Spartanburg Regional Health System in 1990. Jim was an avid outdoorsman. He held lifetime memberships with Trout Unlimited and the National Rifle Association. He also held memberships with the Contemporary Long Rifle Association, the Piedmont Muzzle Loaders Association, the Bowersville Masonic Lodge #595, and numerous hunting clubs. In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 32 years, Cynthia Hudgens Carter; children, Meredith Ann Carter Krzyston and her husband Stephen of Columbia, SC, James William Carter Jr. of New York, NY, and Lauren Elizabeth Carter of Melbourne, FL; sister, Mary Brooks Carter Hogan (Bill) of Hartwell, GA; and brothers, Richard Brooks Carter of Nashville, TN and Stephen Clay Carter (Kathy) of Hartwell, GA. He was predeceased by a half-brother, Robert Harris Carter. A service honoring his memory will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 14, 2017, in the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Dr. Tom Evans. Visitation will follow in the church Parlor. A memorial service will also be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Hartwell First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Howell St., Hartwell, GA 30643, by the Rev. Dr. R. Allen Stewart. The family will receive friends following the service. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
