Dr. Virginia Aleine Burgess, 80, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, March 19, 2009, at Magnolia Manor of Inman. Born September 16, 1928, in Stuart, FL, she was the daughter of the late Eddie Askew and Hettie Belle Fulton Burgess. A graduate of Florida State University, she received her Doctorate of Philosophy in Education from the University of South Carolina. She was a public schoolteacher, having taught in Florida, Louisiana, Illinois, Germany, and retired after 15 years in Anchorage, AK. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg and the Tom McDaniels Sunday School Class and a member of the DAR - Cowpens Chapter. Survivors include a sister, Mary Melle (Met) Schrieffer and her husband George A. of Inman; three nieces, Jeanie Nethery, Carol Brown, and Amy Haase; one nephew, Eddie Schrieffer; and ten great-nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a niece, Ginger Schrieffer. Visitation will be 2:00-2:45 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2009, in the Parlor of the First Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009, in Fernhill Memorial Gardens in Stuart, FL, under the direction of Martin Funeral Home.
