Douglas Osborne Hubbell died Tuesday, September 26, 2023. He was born January 6, 1942, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Harold Arthur and Mary Virginia Osborne Hubbell.
He earned undergraduate and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech. In 1966, he married Marilyn Patricia Morrison, whom he met on a blind date. After Doug received his doctorate from Princeton University, the couple spent a year in Switzerland, where he pursued postdoctoral studies. In 1970, having accepted a job with Hoechst Fibers, they settled in Spartanburg, SC. The job with the German company provided the chance for the young family to spend a year in Bobingen, Germany. Eventually, Doug went on to form his own consulting company, focusing on quality improvement through statistical analysis, which allowed him the opportunity for wide travel.
Doug was a longtime member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, where he served as senior warden, chalice bearer, and choir member. He loved barbershop music, singing with The Red Barons Quartet and directing The Palmetto Statesmen Chorus. He loved the outdoors, including hiking, camping, playing tennis and golf, and most of all, sailing. He was a waterman at heart.
In addition to his wife Marilyn, Doug leaves two daughters, Erin Marie Hubbell of Spartanburg, and Mary Patricia Hubbell (Gregory Brown) of Belchertown, Massachusetts; a beloved granddaughter, Grace Marie Till; and a loyal dog, Daisy.
A Celebration of Life with Holy Eucharist will be held on Saturday, October 7, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church, 400 Dupre Drive, Spartanburg, SC, 29307.
Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel is assisting the family.
