Douglas Franklin Higgins, 61, of 1088 Springfield Road, died Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born July 1, 1947, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of Catherine Grogan Higgins of Moore and the late Fred Burnett Higgins. He was employed as Network Manager with AT&T for over 40 years and retired in 1995 as the last volunteer chief for the North Spartanburg Area Fire Department. He was a member of the Carolina Classic Car Club, R&B Shag Club, American Legion, Spartanburg Cotillion, and Telephone Pioneers of America. He was Past President of the Spartanburg County Fire Chiefs Association, a former instructor with the South Carolina State Fire Academy, and an EMT. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Diann Gilbert Higgins; a daughter, Beth Higgins Walker and husband Scott, a son, Dougie Higgins and wife Hollie, and a granddaughter, Brittany Walker, all of Inman; a brother, Joe R. Higgins and wife Neeley of Roebuck; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 6:00-9:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Glenn Rusher. Burial will be in Good Shepherd Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 3535 Pelham Road, Suite 101, Greenville, SC 29615. The family is at the home.
