Dorothy Louise Harris Montgomery, 90, of Charlottesville, VA, died March 5, 2015. Born May 30, 1924 in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Gentry and Martha Brock Harris and wife of the late James Benjamin Montgomery. Mrs. Montgomery was a graduate of St. Mary's School in Raleigh, NC, and Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, with post-graduate studies at Columbia University in New York City. She married Jim Montgomery, also of Spartanburg, in 1948. Prior to her marriage she was an Assistant Fashion Editor at McCall's Magazine in New York. Mrs. Montgomery lived most of her life in Martinsville, VA, where she was active in the Charity League and the Martinsville Garden Club. She served as President of the Garden Club of Virginia from 1982 to 1984 and in 2004 was awarded the Massie Medal for Distinguished Achievement, the highest honor bestowed by that organization. She was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church in Martinsville where she gave generously of her time and talent in improving and beautifying the church building and grounds. Mrs. Montgomery and her husband were among the founders of Carlisle School in Martinsville. Survivors include her daughters, Elisabeth M. Wells of New Canaan, CT, and Louise B. Montgomery of Silver Spring, MD. Graveside services were held on Monday, March 9, 2015, in West Oakwood Cemetery, Spartanburg, SC, conducted by Rev. J. Edward Morris. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the SPCA of Martinsville-Henry County, 132 Joseph Martin Hwy, Martinsville, VA 24112.
