Dorothy Mcgee

Dorothy Bradford McGee "Dot", 94, went to her heavenly home, being welcomed into the arms of Jesus, on Thursday, January 31, 2013. She was a resident of White Oak Estates Nursing Home at the time of her death. Born October 24, 1918, in Columbia, SC, she was the third of five children born to the late Tutt Sloan and Zula Lee Bradford. Dot and Harold Newell McGee eloped on August 3, 1940. They lived in Spartanburg until 1950, moved to Woodruff, SC, then to Daytona Beach, Florida in 1953, and in 1966 they moved to Maryland. While in Maryland, Dot became the Administrative Secretary for the House of Representative's Education and Public Welfare Committee's Research Division in the Library of Congress. She returned to Spartanburg in 1980 after the loss of her husband and retiring from her position in Washington, DC. After returning to Spartanburg, Mrs. McGee became a member of First Baptist Church, which she loved. She was a member of the Lydia Sunday School Class, Young at Heart and WMU. Dot sang in the Senior Choir and worked in the Helping Center. She volunteered at Mary Black Hospital for 17 years and served Mobile Meals. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James Ronald McGee; her son-in-law, James H. Temples; two sisters, Sarah Weiss and Zula Lee Wood; and a brother, Tutt Sloan Bradford, Jr. Dot is survived by a daughter, Judie McGee Temples of Charlotte, NC; a brother, Randolph Bowen Bradford of Spartanburg; a daughter-in-law, Cynthia McGee of Meridian, MS; four granddaughters, Kristi Temples (David) of Overland Park, KS, Lori Temples Armistead (Paul) of Durham, NC, Lisa McGee Roach (Daniel), and Laura McGee Turner (Derick), all of Meridian, MS; a grandson, James Ronald McGee of Meridian, MS; seven great-granddaughters; six great-grandsons; and numerous nephews and nieces. The family will receive friends at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 10, 2013 in the Parlor of First Baptist Church, Spartanburg. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 3:00 PM in Davis Chapel, with the Rev. Dr. Donald J. Wilton and the Rev. Sal Barone officiating. Interment will be private. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church General Fund, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family wishes to thank the staff at White Oak Estates and Hospice Care of SC who attended Mrs. McGee during her residence and illness. Also, thanks are extended to The J. F.
