Dorothy Irene Duemmling

Dorothy Irene (Cartus) "Dot" Duemmling, a beacon of intelligence, spirit, and wisdom, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 7, 2024, in Spartanburg, SC, at the age of 100. Born on January 25, 1923, in Pittsburgh, PA, the daughter of the late Walter Julius Cartus and Florence Loretta Baker Cartus. Dot lived a full century marked by her tireless zest for life and the impact she had on those around her.

A proud graduate of South Hills High School's Class of 1940, Dorothy's academic achievements set the stage for a life characterized by continuous learning and an unwavering curiosity about the world.  As a young woman, she moved to Miami and met the love of her life Charles Duemmling. They were married in 1950 and later moved to Chicago for Charlie to study his career of architecture.  After graduation, they moved to Ft. Lauderdale, where Dottie worked as a real estate agent.

Together they enjoyed traveling to various places, including a cruise down the Mississippi and to Alaska. Dottie was a gifted seamstress, often creating her own clothing from her sketches and patterns. Most of all, Dottie loved her cats and especially cherished “Cat” birthday cards in her retirement.

She and Charlie retired to Spartanburg where she enjoyed piano lessons and painting.

Dottie was Protestant by faith and attended Skylynn Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her Husband Charles W. Duemmling (Oct. 17, 2011), her Sister, Marie F. Melton (Feb. 22, 2004), A sister in Infancy and Niece Sharon M. Oblack (Mar. 30, 2016) and her husband John J. Oblack (Oct. 12, 2014). She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Dottie is survived by her Great-Nephew, Kenneth P. Melton and wife Jane of New Port Richey, Fla Great-Nieces, Janet M. Swank and husband Smitty and Kristin J. Cook and husband Tim all of West Newton; along with nine great-great-nieces and nephews, and six great-great-great-nephews. Each of these relatives will forever hold dear the stories, laughter, and wisdom that Dot shared throughout her century of life.

Dottie had a sharp mind, was always spirited, and remained fiercely independent until her death.

Dottie’s family wishes to extend deep gratitude to special friends, who have helped her over the past few years; Val, Nancy, Miss Gail and Rick.

Dorothy's passing marks the end of an era, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of her family and friends. Her life was a tapestry of experiences that spanned times of profound change, and through it all, Dottie remained a steadfast presence, a source of comfort and joy to those fortunate enough to have known her.

Dorothy’s Family will hold a private Visitation and Funeral Service in the Frank Kapr Funeral Home, Inc. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683.

 Burial will take place in West Newton Cemetery, next to her late husband Charles.
