Dorothy Bates Burris, 89, of Landrum, SC, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. Born June 28, 1924, in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Horace Andrew and Lula Mae Stone Bates, and widow of Daniel M. Burris, Jr. A graduate of Spartanburg High School, Mrs. Burris played in many bridge tournaments in Atlanta, Savannah, Hilton Head, and Charleston. She was a telephone operator in Charleston, SC, during World War II, and cherished her responsibility of making phone connections to loved ones abroad. She also loved birds and animals. Surviving is her son, Daniel M. Burris III of Blowing Rock, NC; sister-in-law, Alma Burris White Coward of Spartanburg, SC; and a cousin, Barbara Millwood of Jacksonville, FL. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, Buddy Bates. A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 15, 2013, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. David Smith.
