Dorothy Mae Peuffier Burnett, 97, of Birmingham, AL passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2025.
Mrs. Burnett was born March 16, 1927, in Augusta, GA to Joseph Grandjean Peuffier and Lily Sharpton Peuffier. In her youth she lived in several cities in South Carolina and Georgia due to her father’s employment with the Charleston and Western Carolina Railroad. She graduated from Spartanburg High School and attended Converse College as well as Cecil’s Business School. Dorothy was employed as a bookkeeper at J. W. Lewis & Company and White Tire Company. She also worked at Mitzi’s 2nd Place in her later years.
On March 27, 1948, Dorothy married Julian Clifton Burnett, with whom she celebrated 39 years of marriage before his death in 1987. She lived in Spartanburg, SC until 1977 when her husband’s employment with Coca-Cola Bottling Company United relocated the family to Birmingham, AL. She faithfully attended First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, SC for many years. After moving to Birmingham, she attended Mountain Brook Baptist Church and was active in the Grace Nelson Hope Sunday School Class. Even though Dorothy enjoyed all forms of needlework and baking, family was always her first priority.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Clifton Burnett; her parents, Joseph Grandjean Peuffier and Lily Sharpton Peuffier; and her grandparents, Arthur Sharpton and Sally Sharpton and Benjamin Peuffier and Henrietta Peuffier. She is survived by her sons, Clifton Joseph Burnett of Greensboro, NC and Jeffrey Julian Burnett of Birmingham, AL.
The family would like to thank Dorothy’s caregivers; Doris Jackson, Deidra Smith and Lisa Yarbrough for their devoted and loving care.
A memorial service was held at Ridout’s Valley Chapel in Homewood, AL on March 3, 2025.
Graveside service will be held, 11:00 am, Friday, March 7, 2025, in Oakwood Cemetery, 182 Oakwood Ave, Spartanburg, SC 29302. Service will be conducted by the Rev. Brian Redding.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mountain Brook Baptist Church, 3631 Montevallo Rd S, Birmingham, AL 35213.
