Dorothy Abernathy

March 26, 1921 — January 23, 2010

Dorothy Lucille Cunningham Abernathy, of Spartanburg, died Saturday, January 23, 2010, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born March 26, 1921, she was the daughter of the late John Aldridge and Cordia Hill Cunningham and the wife of the late George Franklin Abernathy of Spartanburg. A graduate of Spartanburg High School, she received her undergraduate degree in Early Childhood Education at Winthrop College and her Master's in Teaching at Teacher's College, Columbia University, in New York, NY. She was a retired kindergarten and first grade school teacher. A long time member of Cudd Memorial Baptist Church, she was a member of the Homemaker's Class. Survivors include two daughters, Jane Dickerson and her husband Jeff, and Mary Timmons and her husband Buddy, all of Spartanburg; grandchildren, Drew, Paige and Chase Timmons of Spartanburg, and Allan Dickerson and his wife Crystal, and their children, Nathan and Cary, of Summerville, SC. She was predeceased by two brothers, Wallace Cunningham of Charlotte, NC, and Walter Cunningham of Tulsa, OK. Visitation will be 11:00-1:00 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Private graveside services will be conducted by the Rev. Danny Garrett. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Cudd Memorial Baptist Church for the Annie Armstrong Easter Mission Offering, 1301 Boiling Springs Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303; to Spartanburg Regional Foundation, Lifeline Fund, 101 East Wood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or to the charity of one's choice.
