Doris Isabell Brown Wright, 73, widow of Ed "Eddie" Travis Wright passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017 after a brief illness. She is survived by her mother, Margaret Crenshaw Brown; her brother, Robert M. Brown of Huntersville, NC; a sister-in-law, Susan Wright Simpson; and nephew, Matthew B. Simpson of Spartanburg. She was predeceased by her father, Banks M. Brown. Doris was born in Charlotte, NC and a graduate of North Mecklenburg High School, Erskine College, and Rutgers University College of Library Science. Doris was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served on various committees and as Church Librarian and Historian. Doris worked for the Spartanburg County Public Libraries for 38 years as a reference librarian, Director of Reference Services, Assistant County Librarian, and interim County Librarian. Doris was instrumental in managing the fiscal affairs of the Library system during the expansion and construction of multiple library facilities. She was a gifted manager and leader. Doris was past-President and life member of Uptown Sertoma of Spartanburg and a past member of The Haven's Board of Directors. Her love of community was exhibited through her work with Auction for a Cause. In 2001, her professional mentor, Dennis Bruce recognized Doris' outstanding contributions to Spartanburg with a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow. A lifelong learner, Doris was known for developing the skills to knit, sew, and create beautiful stained glass. She enjoyed traveling and participating in cultural and literary events. Doris leaves many friends and family as well as her faithful dog, Mardy. A memorial service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood St., Spartanburg, SC 29302, by the Rev. Neal Y. Woods. A reception for friends and family will follow in the fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Spartanburg County Foundation - Spartanburg County Public Libraries Capital Projects Fund, 424 East Kennedy Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; The Haven Homeless Shelter, PO Box 2914, Spartanburg, SC 29304; Trinity United Methodist Church, 626 Norwood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302; or the charity of one's choice.
