Doris Downey Bullman, 79, of 239 Ferndale Drive, died Monday, January 11, 2010, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born August 18, 1930, in Spartanburg, SC, she was the daughter of the late Oliver J. and Elizabeth Bennett Downey and the wife of the late Rev. Johnnie G. Bullman. She attended Spartanburg Technical College and Beavercreek Bible Institute and was a church secretary. She was a member of Peace Free Will Baptist Church where she served as pianist and taught Sunday School for many years. She only missed six church services in 51 years. Mrs. Bullman was known in Spartanburg County for her compassion, generosity and love to all those in need. Her greatest love was for her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and her greatest pride was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was so dedicated and involved in their lives as demonstrated by her receiving the Helen Stokes Lifetime PTA Membership Award from Spartanburg County School District 6. Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Murphy and her husband Jim of Duncan, and Libby Thornton and her husband Rev. Chuck Thornton of Spartanburg; two sons, Ronnie Bullman and his wife Susan of Union, and Johnnie Bullman, Jr. of Spartanburg; a brother reared in the home, Oliver Downey, Jr. and his wife Beth of Spartanburg; a brother, Jofey Downey and his wife Becky of Wellford; eight grandchildren, Bo Jackson, Dawn Guy (Jeff), Chip Thornton, Candace Gilman (Josh), Ron Bullman, Jr. (Melanie), Trey Bullman, Brent Downey (Jan), and Amy Downey; two step-grandchildren, Ryan McCoy and Sean Murphy (Michelle); and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Louise Horne. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Peace Free Will Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Chuck Thornton. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum. Pallbearers will be Brent Downey, Bo Jackson, Ron Bullman, Chip Thornton, Trey Bullman, Jeff Guy, Josh Gilman, and Ryan McCoy.
