Donald White

April 22, 1935 — January 22, 2018

Donald Edward White, 82, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Monday, January 22, 2018, at Waterford at Dillon Pointe where he had been a resident for seven months. Born April 22, 1935, in Cherokee Falls, NC, he was the son of the late Oscar and Vera Bachelor White. Mr. White attended Gaffney High School, Spartanburg Methodist College, and graduated with a major in accounting from his beloved Wofford College in 1958. Upon leaving SMC he enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he served for two years to assist with financing his college education. During that time, he married the love of his life, Patricia Jo Bright "Patsy". They had two beautiful daughters who grew up to have families of their own and one son who died before birth. Don and Patsy remained married and devoted to each other until her death in 2002. Don was a whiz with numbers and earned his CPA license and began working for the Scott Taylor Accounting Firm soon after graduating from Wofford. He became a partner with the firm in 1962 and remained as the firm eventually grew to become Scott Taylor, White and Wingo. He was known and teased for never missing a day of work and was still working five days a week as recently as the summer of 2017. He was also a member of AICPA and SCACPA. Even though his chosen career involved numbers, he had varied interests. Don was an avid Wofford Terrier football fan and held season tickets for many years. He enjoyed working in the yard and was especially talented with his hands. He loved creating beautiful furniture for his family, but his favorite piece was a walnut desk that he made for his office. One of the accomplishments of which he was most proud was completing a booklist for college bound students he picked up from the Spartanburg County Library in 1965. The list was made up of 94 books including all the classics such as A Tale of Two Cities, Moby Dick, and War and Peace, just to name a few. Left to honor his memory are his two daughters, Tracey Collier (Bob) and Kelly Hardee (Jeff); four grandchildren, Margaret Mason Johnson, Robert Jeffrey Collier, Meredith Lea Johnson, and Kate Elizabeth Johnson; two step-grandchildren, Jonathan Tyler Hardee and Caroline Regan Hardee; a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Lois White of Gaffney, SC; and a sister-in-law, Mildred White who was married to his brother, Jimmy, who preceded him in death; and many other dear family members in Gaffney, Blacksburg, and throughout the southeast. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Floyd and Jimmy White. Visitation will be 2:30-3:30 PM Wednesday, January 24, 2018, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307 with funeral services following at 4:00 PM, conducted by The Rev. Ken Kirkley. Burial, with military rites, will be in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
