Heaven welcomed a new angel on Thursday morning, April 30, 2015! Donald Rex Hughes, 80, passed away warm in his bed next to his loving wife of more than 60 years. Born January 20, 1935, in Shelby, NC, he was a beloved father, grandfather, son, brother, friend, and role model for many. Donald was the youngest child of the late Willie Rex and Ida Pinkney Newton Hughes and is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Caldwell Hughes; sons, Timothy Hughes of Spartanburg and Jeffrey Hughes and wife Paula Hughes of New Prospect; grandchildren, Katie Hughes of Spartanburg, Thorn Hughes of New Prospect, and Kristina Cannon of Spartanburg. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, predeceased by his brother, J.D. Hughes; and sisters, Erlene McClellan, Billie Hawkins, and Norma Green. Mr. Hughes attended Spartanburg High School, Spartanburg Methodist College, and the University of South Carolina (Columbia). He retired from Milliken & Co. after 40 years of service in the Engineering Department. A U.S. Navy veteran, he was a member of Lone Oak Masonic Lodge #372, Hejaz Shrine Club, and a former Boy Scout leader. A devout Christian and active, dedicated Deacon, he was a life-long member of Drayton Baptist Church and a joy to all who knew him. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:00 PM Sunday, May 3, 2015, in Sunset Memorial Park, 1955 Cannons Campground Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by the Rev. Jim Fisher. Visitation will follow at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Drayton Baptist Church, PO Box 357, Drayton, SC 29333.
