Donald Barrett

November 22, 1933 — January 11, 2011

Donald Talmadge Barrett, 77, of 250 S. Hudson Barksdale Boulevard, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 11, 2011, at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC. Born November 22, 1933 in Murrayville, GA, he was the son of the late Horace G. and Edna Long Barrett, and was reared in Greenville, SC and in Kings Mountain, NC. The grandson of a Southern Baptist Minister, the late Rev. William Franklin Long, Donald was active in church work for most of his life. He served at the Christian Service Men's Center in San Antonio, TX in the late 1960s and Norfolk, VA in the 1970s. He was Chaplain of the Resident Council at the Harry C. White Manor and a member of Calvary Temple Community Church in Una. Mr. Barrett was a veteran of the U. S. Army. After his retirement, he worked part time for ten years at the Bi-Lo Store in Boiling Springs. Donald was a graduate of Crozier Tech High School in Dallas, TX, and attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, IL. He held a particular interest in missions and graduated from International Bible College and Seminary in Orlando, FL with an AA degree in Bible and Theology and was ordained a Minister of the Gospel by the same school. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Vivian Blackwell Barrett; a daughter, Kelly "Susan" Roberts of Port Orange, FL; two sons, Daniel F. Barrett of Alexis, NC and Rhyan T. Barrett of Spartanburg, SC; three granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Joan B. Carroll of Kings Mountain, NC and M. Fern B. Windsor of Rock Hill, SC. He was predeceased by a brother, Bobby Eugene Barrett of Detroit, MI and two infant great-grandsons. The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:45 p.m. Sunday, January 16, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frankie Taylor. Burial will be in Arrowood Baptist Church Cemetery, Chesnee, SC. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
