Don Payne

Don Herbert Payne, 76, of Spartanburg, died Monday, July 11, 2011, at Mary Black Memorial Hospital. Born July 10, 1935, in Marshall, NC, he was the son of the late Hugh S. and Carrie Price Payne, and husband of the late Jewell Elaine Worley Payne. Mr. Payne was a former educator, manager and president of Federal Land Bank Association, and CEO of Palmetto Farm Credit Service. He was a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church where he was Sunday School Director and a teacher, Training Union Director, deacon, usher, chairman of the Finance Committee, and the Pastor Search Committee. He also served as secretary for the Sertoma Club of Spartanburg and was a Mason. His academic accomplishments include an AA Degree from Mars Hill College, a BS in Business Degree from the University of Tennessee, and a Masters in Education from Western Carolina University. Survivors include his son, Keith Brent Payne of Gallatin, TN; A. Renee Payne Carruth (Steve) of Waterloo, SC; grandchildren, Colin and Caitlin Payne of Nashville, TN, Elliot Carruth, Carrie Smith (Walt), all of Jacksonville, NC, Allison, Sarah, and Kathryn Carruth of Waterloo, SC; brothers and sisters, Mildred Phillips (Bruce) of Mars Hill; Swann Payne (Joyce), and Judith Morris (Sam), all of Asheville, NC. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, July 12, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Zion Hill Baptist Church, by the Rev. Keith Davis, the Rev. Dr. Marcus Bishop, and the Rev. Craig Thompson. A graveside service will follow at 4:00 PM in The Jerry Ramsey Cemetery, Marshall, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Paynes Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Roger Payne, 1030 Roberts Branch Road, Marshall, NC 28753. The family will be at the home.
