Denise Catto McKeown passed away at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, April 5, 2022. Denise was the daughter of the late Philip Dominic and Ruth Newman Catto. She was born July 6, 1951 in Milford, MA, and moved to Spartanburg, SC, at the age of ten. Denise was a 1969 graduate of Dorman High School.
Denise is survived by her dear husband, William Minor McKeown, her beloved son and daughter-in-law, William Mayo McKeown and Karen Lass McKeown and their daughters Elizabeth McKeown, Sarah McKeown, and Rebecca McKeown. She is survived also by sister Alyce Caulder; brothers Michael Catto (Elaine), Phillip Catto (Sarita) and Stephen Catto (Terri); sisters-in-law Betsy Martin (Hank) and Marianna McKeown; and brother-in-law Kirk McKeown (Joan). She is survived by nieces Jennie, Kim, Samantha, Anna Beth, Erin, Kerry, April, and Scottie; and her nephews Jason, Justin, Nick, Tony, Mike, and Daniel.
She was a graduate of Spartanburg Hospital Nursing School and worked as a dedicated nurse for fifty years beginning as a Med-Surg nurse at the Spartanburg General Hospital. She has served as Director of OB Services at Mary Black Hospital, Nurse Administrator at Dutchman Correctional Facility, Nurse Educator for Surgical Services at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, Director of OB Services at Wallace Thompson Hospital, Labor and Delivery Nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, and House Supervisor at Union Medical Center.
An incredibly talented musician, Denise could play anything she was asked to play on a variety of instruments, most notably piano, organ and accordion. She was a member of and accompanist for the Dorman High School Chorus. She spent a lifetime sharing music with her community. For many years she served as Music Director at New Hope Baptist Church in Cross Anchor, SC.
A rare talent in the kitchen, Denise enjoyed not only cooking the most amazing food, but also hosting family and friends to share it as an expression of her love.
Visitation will be 11:00 am – 12:15 pm Friday, April 15, 2022 at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. A Funeral service will be at 12:30 pm, at the chapel, conducted by The Rev. Jimmie Farmer. Burial will follow in Glenn Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 6001 Hwy. 215, Pauline, SC 29374.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the building fund of First Baptist Church, Spartanburg, SC.
