David L. Hughes, 96, of Spartanburg, died Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born November 22, 1914, in Spartanburg County, he was the son of the late Boyce E. and Nettie Allen Hughes and husband of the late Ruby Alverson Hughes and then the late Beth Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a retired barber, owner and operator of Hughes Barbershop, formerly on Church Street. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, and a former Mason, who loved his Lord and family. He was an avid water skier who skied until he was 66 years old. Mr. Hughes was the last surviving member of his immediate family of six children. Surviving family members include his son, Randall Hughes of the home; a cousin, Charles (Paula) Sloan of Grey Court; several nieces and nephews; and special friends and neighbors, Judy and Tommy Bishop. Visitation will be 5:00-6:00 PM Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, February 21, 2011 at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Phillip D. Ellenburg and the Rev. Dr. Herbert Garrett. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. The family is at the home.
