Dale Terry Ogden, USAF SMSgt (Ret.), 87, of Spartanburg, SC, died Monday, January 8, 2018, at Summit Hills Retirement Community. Born June 16, 1930, in Oak Park, IL, he was the son of the late Wayne Terry Ogden and Mildred Johnson Ogden. Mr. Ogden attended schools in various towns and was a 1948 graduate of Streator Township High School in Streator, IL. He went on to attend two quarters of college at Knox College, Galesburg, IL before entering the United States Air Force in 1950. The USAF assigned him to duties in Florida, Louisiana, North Dakota, Illinois, and Texas in the USA and overseas assignments in Taiwan, Japan, Spain, and Germany. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in 1970 and having completed his undergraduate degree while in the service, furthered his education with a Master's Degree in Library Science from Our Lady of the Lake University, San Antonio, TX and a Master's Degree in Communications from the University of Northern Colorado. Following his retirement, Mr. Ogden entered Civil Service with an assignment in Coatesville, PA and returned to HQ USAF Security Service and was in charge of the Technical/Recreational Library at Kelly AFB, TX. He retired from Civil Service in 1990. Dale was a member of Saint Paul United Methodist Church in Spartanburg where he served as Church Librarian and was a member and team teacher of Prime Time Sunday School Class. He had a strong interest in the history of Grand Ridge, IL and was instrumental in researching the history of the village. In 2010 he was honored in the town homecoming parade as Grand Marshall and was named Grand Ridge Historian. Survivors include his wife, Jean Oliphant Walter Ogden; two sons, Steven Terry Ogden and wife Vicki of Oklahoma City, OK and Brian Edward Ogden and wife Cheryl of Houston, TX; two step-daughters, Hollis Walter Uecker and husband Wayne of Kerrville, TX and Dr. Leslie Walter Thompson of Hattiesburg, MS; one sister, Sandra Ogden Burns and husband John of Ottawa, IL; and two step-grandchildren, Colin Hilton Uecker and Braden Isaac Uecker, both of Kerrville, TX. His first wife, Jean Louise Eide died in 1977 and he married Jean Oliphant Walter in 1980 in San Antonio, TX. When retired, Dale and Jean had a wholesale cookie business - The Texas Chuckle Cookie Company - which they sold in 1995 when they moved to Spartanburg, SC to oversee Jean's mother in Gaffney, SC (Florence Hollis Oliphant) who died in 2003. Dale had many hobbies - he loved the NBA San Antonio Spurs, and enjoyed collecting and selling books. For the past two years, as his health was declining, he was a resident at Summit Hills Retirement Community and the family would like to thank the Summit Hills staff for their loving care. In particular, thanks go to interim head nurse, Janice Wilkins and hospice nurses, Debbie Penland and Courtney Johnson. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, January 14, 2018, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by The Rev. John L. Warren, Jr. Visitation will follow at the graveside.
