Daisy Thompson Barton, 93, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at Eden Terrace Assisted Living. Mrs. Barton was born on February 16, 1916, in Charleston, SC. While she had previously resided in Orlando, FL, Charlotte, NC, and Alexandria, VA, she lived in Spartanburg for about 15 years. She was the daughter of the late Cornelius Owen Thompson, Sr. of Charleston, SC, and Mabel Snider of Kingstree, SC. Her husband, Frederick A. Barton, preceded her in death, as did her sister, Catherine Lucille Thompson Lait, and brothers, Cornelius Owen Thompson, Jr. and Allan James Thompson. In 1935, Mrs. Barton graduated from Memminger High School in Charleston and was President of her class. She was on the first bus that traveled across the John P. Grace Memorial Bridge and was the only person to attend both the grand opening of the Francis Marion Hotel in 1924 and its reopening in 1996. Mrs. Barton attended Columbia Union College in Takoma Park, MD, but returned home to work for several years in the family business, Thompson Transit Company, Yellow Cab of Charleston, Gray Line Bus Line, Gray Line Tours and Gray Line Water Tours. Her marriage to Dr. William D. McDowell ended in divorce. In 1969 she married Frederick A. Barton of Alexandria, VA. Mrs. Barton was active in numerous church and civic associations. She was a member of the Spartanburg Seventh-day Adventist Church, was designated Volunteer of the Year in 1995 for her service at the Spartanburg Children's Shelter where she nurtured children experiencing difficult challenges in life, and was a member of the Civic Association in her community, The Arbors. Mrs. Barton is survived by her son, William D. McDowell, Jr., daughter-in-law, Nancy D. McDowell, granddaughter, Hollie M. Faehner and her husband Stephen J., grandson, William D. McDowell, III, and great-grandsons, Owen Lewis, Jackson Ray, and Samuel Jay Faehner, all of Silver Spring, MD, and Barbara and Ed Ward of Gordonsville, VA. Mrs. Barton also leaves a large number of nieces and nephews who live in North and South Carolina, Oregon, Florida, and Louisiana, and numerous friends and loved ones that she cherished at Eden Terrace where she resided for the last five years. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at the Spartanburg Seventh-day Adventist Church conducted by Pastor Jerry LaFave. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
