Colonel Philip Hunter McCorkle, United States Army Retired, 91, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at his home. Colonel McCorkle was born in York, SC, in June of 1918, the son of the late Newton Craig and Elizabeth Hunter McCorkle. He graduated from Clemson College, Class of '39, and earned a MSBA degree from George Washington University. He was a career Army officer and retired after thirty years of service in the Regular Army. Colonel McCorkle served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War, and was a member of the Military Officers Association of America. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg and a former Deacon and Elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Arlington, VA. Colonel McCorkle is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Smith McCorkle, and two sons, Dr. Cavert Keith McCorkle of Spartanburg, and Philip Hunter McCorkle, Jr. of Grand Rapids, MI. Other survivors are his daughter-in-law, Gayle, grandson, Philip Hunter McCorkle, III, DDS and his wife Natalie, and two great-grandsons, Jack and Michael, all of Grand Rapids, MI, grandson, Matthew Campbell McCorkle, Esq. of Henderson, NV, nieces and nephews of York and Florence, SC, and Charles Allen Burns of Spartanburg. He was predeceased by his brother, Craig McCorkle, Jr.; and his sister, Winslow McCorkle Leake. A private family graveside service with full military honors will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery in York, SC.
