Col. Richard Darwin Koon, U. S. Army (Ret.), 76, of Greenville, SC, died Sunday, May 4, 2014, at Emeritus of Greenville. Born June 17, 1937, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of the late James Wilson and Cleora Prince Koon and loving husband for 45 years to Iris O. Koon of Moore, SC. Colonel Koon retired from the U. S. Army in 1984 following 23 years of service. He served on the Secretary of the Army's Staff in Washington, DC when he left active duty and was awarded: the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Vietnam Service Medal. Mr. Koon served as president and CEO of Cubic Worldwide Technical Services (CWTS) Inc. beginning in 1993. He also served in a dual capacity as vice president, Logistics and Support Services at Cubic Defense System (CDS) through 1997. From 1984 through 1991, he served as director of Worldwide Product Support, and from 1991 through 1993, as director of International Programs at Loral Electro-Optical Systems, Inc., later known as Lockheed Martin EOS. Mr. Koon retired as a Cubic Corporation executive at the end of December 2006 and established his retirement residence on the Middle Tyger River in Moore, South Carolina. He was born and raised in Spartanburg County and graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1955 and Wofford College in 1960, deciding late in his career to return to his native area. He obtained an MBA in Financial Management from Babson College, Boston, MA. His undergraduate degree in Business Administration is from Wofford College, Spartanburg, SC. While serving in the U. S. Army, Mr. Koon attended the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS and the Senior Course at the Naval War College, Newport, RI. Memberships include Association of U. S. Army, American Defense Preparedness Association/National Security Industrial Association, Association for Services Management International, Contract Services Association of America, director and member of the Policy Council, and Aerospace Industries Association, member of the Product Support Committee. In addition to his wife, he is survived by children, Pricilla Easton of Moore, SC, Rodney Field of Bowie, MD, and Sheri Kelleher of Reston, VA; and seven grandchildren; brother, Robert Koon of Jacksonville, FL; and sister, Shirley Koon of Boiling Springs, SC. Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 PM Friday, May 9, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at a later date at Fort Myer Memorial Chapel, Arlington, VA. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
