Coach Hanning

October 26, 1923 — October 2, 2014

Lee Hanning, 90, of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, October 2, 2014, at his home. Born October 26, 1923, in Nemacolin, PA, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Freda Walters Hanning, and husband of the late Barbara Jean Hall Hanning. A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Hanning served in the 101st Airborne, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and participated in the invasion at Utah Beach. Lee was a longtime employee of Hoechst Fibers, retired from Houston Power and Light, and a longtime assistant coach of the kicking team for the Wofford College Terriers. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Terrier Club, and a lifetime member of the Elks Club. Surviving is his fiancé, Helen James Martenson; brother, John D. Hanning of San Diego, CA; granddaughter, Elizabeth Glenn of Easley, SC; numerous nieces and nephews; and his many adopted extended family members to whom he was lovingly referred to as "Pop Pop". In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Charles Hanning, Mel Hanning, and Jerry Edwards; and a sister, Pauline Hanning Norse. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday, October 12, 2014 at Wofford College Leonard Auditorium, 429 N. Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29303, by the Rev. Dr. Ron Robinson. A reception, hosted by the Wofford College Athletic Dept., will follow in the Harley Room of the Richardson Athletics Building. The entombment service in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum will be private.
