Clyde Owens

Clyde Preston Owens, 91, of Spartanburg, died Monday, January 10, 2011 at Summit Hills. Born May 27, 1919, in Spartanburg County, SC, he was the son of the late William Jackson and Elizabeth Jane Blackwell Owens. He was the husband of Betty Williams Horton Owens and was first married to the late Lorene Parris Owens. A graduate of Holly Springs High School, he was co-owner of John N. Owens, Sr. Construction Company, along with his brother, Grady Owens. They were custom home builders for local physicians, lawyers, textiles owners, and other businesses in Spartanburg, with his brother Marshall Owens doing most of their masonry work. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, the Bob Morgan Sunday School Class, Sanctuary Choir for more than 40 years, Yesterday's Teens Choir, Deacon for two terms, and served on various committees. He was an ordained deacon at Calvary Baptist Church and was a co-founder, deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and served on various committees at Cudd Memorial Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II. Surviving in addition to his wife is a brother, Marshall Owens of Boiling Springs; two sisters, Thursey Owens Gregg of Wellford, and Dorothy (Dot) Owens Ballew of Columbia; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, John, Horace, Hulon, Earl, and Grady Owens; and four sisters, Joyce Owens Hall, Ailene Owens, Edna Owens, and Alma Owens Revan. Visitation will be 10:00-11:45 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 noon at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Donald J. Wilton and the Rev. Bill Adams. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 250 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
