Clifford Hayslip, Sr.

Clifford Calvin Hayslip Sr., 89, of Columbia County, GA, formerly of Spartanburg, SC, died Thursday, August 14, 2014, at Westwood Extended Care, Evans, GA. Born May 29, 1925 in Wadley, GA, he was the son of the late Otha Louis and Frances Keziah Flake Hayslip and widower of Mary Randolph Hayslip, who died in 2013 after 63 years of marriage. Clifford, a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather, was a WWII Veteran serving in the US Army Air Corps and stationed at Guam Island. He was an engineer and award-winning teacher of math and science. Clifford taught at Evans Jr. High School, Cowpens High School, and Florence High School, where he also coached the girls' basketball team to the state championship. He also was assistant director at Spartanburg Tech (Spartanburg Community College), associate professor at Limestone College, principal at Kelly-Pinckney Elementary School and taught at other schools from elementary to college. Clifford was an avid sportsman, tennis player, and was the Spartanburg city table tennis champion for many years and runner-up in the state championship. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church Spartanburg, where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. Clifford was a devoted family man, who loved and cared for his dear wife, children, and extended family, constantly providing support and guidance. He will always be remembered with affection for his love of life, his genuine enthusiasm, his outgoing and friendly manner, and his deep respect for education and truth. Surviving are his children, Clifford C. Hayslip Jr. (Virginia) of Greenville, NC, Marsha H. Cantrell (Gene) of Grovetown, GA, Warren R. Hayslip (Margaret) of Nashville, TN, Carson S. Hayslip (Anne) of Columbia, SC; grandchildren, Alva Mather (Ben), Andrew Hayslip, Travis Hayslip (Maria), Kara Hayslip, Matthew Cantrell (Keri), Marion Banks (Wade), David Cantrell (Brie), Ann Cantrell, Greg Hayslip, Katie Hayslip, Scott Hayslip, Robert Hayslip, Will Harris Hayslip and Amy Hayslip; five great-grandchildren and sister, Martha Hayslip Bolus of Charleston, SC. He was predeceased by five sisters. Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM on Saturday, August 16, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, August 17, 2014, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307, conducted by Rev. Robert C. Morgan.
