Claude Ridings

Claude Ridings, 92, of 219 Smith Road, passed away Saturday, November 06, 2010, after a long illness. He was born in Polk County, NC, on June 5, 1918, a son of the late Robert J. and Bessie Kiser Ridings, and was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Moore, SC. Claude served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II aboard the USS Sommers, and also participated in the Normandy Invasion. He was co-owner of Ridings Quick Shop and worked at Fairforest Finishing Company prior to and after World War II. Claude is survived by his wife, Marie; a daughter, Dianne Ridings-Norton (A. J.); two sons, Gary Claude Ridings (Susan) and Tex Warren Ridings all of Moore; two sisters, Pearl R. Swindle and Kate R. Ballenger both of Spartanburg; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a stepson, Chris W. Wade of Moore; a step granddaughter and four step great-grandchildren. Claude was predeceased by five brothers, John, Ernest, Hollis, Boyd and Woodrow Ridings; and two sisters, Pauline R. Kirby and Marie R. Smith. Visitation will be held Monday, November 8, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, 790 Highway 417, Moore, SC. Services will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2010 at 2:00 PM at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, conducted by Mr. Bud Brooks, the Rev. Dr. D. J. Horton, the Rev. Raymond A. Hellings, and the Rev. Robert Bevill. Burial with military rights will follow at Westwood Cemetery, Reidville Road (Hwy. 296), Moore, SC. Honorary escort will be the 79 & Up Sunday School Class of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Special Needs Funds, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302 The family extends heartfelt love and appreciation to all of the Hospice personnel who cared for Claude these last several months. Without them, this journey would have been much more difficult. The family is at the home.
