Claire Gregory Capell

Claire Gregory Capell joined the Church Triumphant on October 21, 2024, she was 84. Claire, the daughter of the late W. Wallace Gregory, Sr. and Edna Cobb Gregory, was born in Spartanburg on August 15, 1940.

She graduated from Spartanburg High School, attended Queens College and the University of South Carolina before her marriage. She retired from Spartanburg County Public Library in 2000 after 26 years of service in the Circulation Department. Claire was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg and over the years experienced immense joy from the music ministry.

In retirement, Claire was a volunteer at the Spartanburg Public Library and the First Presbyterian library, and she served as a Stephens Minister at First Presbyterian. Although an injury to her spinal cord had left her disabled to a degree since her teenage years, Claire's middle name was "independence". She did all that she could do for as long as she could.

Claire is survived by her son, Robert D. Capell, Jr. and his wife, Cheri and their children, Mary Katherine, Ben (Natalie), Caroline and Emily (Jacob) Whitt; her great grandson, Isaiah Capell; her daughter, Lisa Ruth Capell, M.D. and her daughters, Zoe and Lucy; her brother, Wallace Gregory and his wife, Dianne and their son, William and his wife, Jenny.

A service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at 11:30 am, Saturday, October 26, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church, 393 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29303, followed by a time of visitation. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Alan Dyer and the Rev. Rachel Klompmaker.
