Christopher James Rubel, 61, passed away on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, in his home in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Born on June 10, 1962, in Madrid, Spain to his mother, Patricia Ann Dewalt Rubel and his father, Dr. Harold Richard Rubel, while his father was serving in the Air Force.
Growing up in Spartanburg, SC, Christopher graduated from Spartanburg High School and then achieved his degree in Microbiology from Clemson University in 1984. This path led him to the Medical University of South Carolina where he earned his medical degree in 1992. Afterwards, he embarked on a distinguished medical career in the primary care field, followed by specializing in Pain Management.
Christopher was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Harold R. Rubel; his mother, Patricia Ann Dewart Rubel; his brother, David S. Rubel, and his sister, Camella Rubel Smith. He will be deeply missed by his surviving family including his two children, Reagan Rubel and Ford Rubel; wife, Merritt McCoy Rubel; brother, Richard A. Rubel (spouse Julie W. Rubel); nieces, Kathryn R. Shelby (spouse Blake Shelby), Elizabeth L. Rubel; nephew, James R. Rubel (spouse Jennifer L. Rubel), and great nieces, Eloise and Madeline Rubel; stepchildren, Kendall Graham (Dylan), Ellison Tolan and Claire Tolan; one grandchild, Easton Richard Graham.

Christopher held a unique and significant role in the lives of many. His desire for adventure led to the achievement of his commercial pilot’s license, master captain’s license, and an array of lifelong friends that he met along the way. His dedication to his patients, devotion to his friends, and love for his family was unparalleled and will forever hold a place in our hearts. He was ambitious and intelligent; generous and kind; adventurous and captivating. His legacy will endure for many years to come.
Visitation will be held 12:30- 1:30 pm, Saturday, August 26, 2023, at Floyd’s Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Nowell Copley. A private interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
