Chester Hoon

August 17, 1920 — November 25, 2012

Chester Anthony "Chet" Hoon, 92, of Cowpens, completed his earthly journey to enter heaven on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at his home with his daughter by his side. He was born August 17, 1920, in Butler, Pennsylvania to George Anthony and Virlinda Millenger Hoon. Chet served as Sergeant in the U. S. Army Signal Corp during World War II. Upon his transfer to his post at Camp Croft, a mutual friend introduced him to his beloved soul mate, Geneva Thomas Hoon. After a brief, whirlwind courtship they were married and absolutely inseparable for over 66 years of marriage until Geneva's death in 2009. Chet completed his career at Met Life Insurance after 25 years of service. He later retired from Broome High School in Spartanburg District 3. He was a 32nd degree Mason and served as a Boy Scout Leader. He was a former Town Councilman and former Mayor of Cowpens, also serving as the Town Judge, while Mayor. He was a longtime member of Cowpens First Baptist Church where he was a former deacon. Survivors include his daughter and true best friend, Janet Marilyn Hoon of Spartanburg, and his daughter, Patty Hoon Oglesby of Forest City, NC; sister, Myrna Hoon McKee and nephew, Richard McKee of Georgetown, Texas; grandson, Brian Oglesby, Esq. and wife Lindsey of Ellenboro, NC; granddaughter, Tricia Oglesby Pyle and husband Todd of Forest City, NC; great-grandchildren, Christa, Cooper, Lily, and Sadie Oglesby of Ellenboro, NC, Zane, Brianna, Brennen Kingery and Cierra Pyle of Forest City, NC. In addition to his wife Geneva, and his parents, he was predeceased by an infant daughter, Janice Virlinda; brother, William Legrand Hoon, MD of Pittsburgh, PA; brother-in-law, Edward McKee of Georgetown, Texas; and son-in-law, Rhett Oglesby of Forest City, NC. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, the Rev. Dr. William Westafer. Burial with military rites by the SC State Guard Honors Team will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
