Cheryl Block Parker, 68, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, March 9, 2021, at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born March 14, 1952, in Spartanburg, she was the daughter of the late Shirley Frey Block Lippert and Donald Taylor Block. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilson Roy Parker. She was a graduate of Spartanburg High School and Georgia Southern University in 1974, with a degree in Sociology. As a social worker, first at the Charles Lea Center and later with McCarthy School, she was a fierce advocate for special needs children and their families for 33 years in Spartanburg District 7. Through her vast knowledge of the Spartanburg community and its resources, families were connected to vital services to receive gifts, food and at times shelter for this special population. As a board member of Foothills Golden Retriever Rescue, Cheryl screened families to ensure abandoned golden retrievers found a safe home and medical attention. She and her husband Roy enjoyed training their retrievers for field trials and completed the requirements for their beloved Zach, to become a Pet Therapy dog. They proved to the medical community how pet therapy contributes to the recovery and well-being of patients and turns tears into smiles. When not caring for their dogs, Cheryl and Roy enjoyed snow skiing, sailing, and serving on various committees at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. Cheryl is survived by her step-father, Luther A. Lippert Sr., sister-in-law, Martha Parker of Marion, SC; nephews, Warren Parker Bennet of Charleston, SC, and James Lesane Griffin (Brittany); great-niece Nadalyn and nephew, Jameson of Spartanburg, SC; cousins Ashley Frey, Steve Frey, and Jodie Price and her Golden, Scout. She was preceded in death by her brothers, William Barry Block and Jeffrey Taylor Block. A Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.
