Charlton Tripp

Charlton Lynn Tripp, 84, of Spartanburg, SC, died June 17, 2017, at Dillon Pointe Assisted Living in Spartanburg. Born May 29, 1933, in Piedmont, SC, he was the son of the late Thaddeus Austin and Hattie Mae (McAlister) Tripp, and the husband of the late Ruby Ann (Woodcock) Tripp. Mr. Tripp attended White Plains School, in Piedmont, SC, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, in Maryland, where he graduated in 1953. While in high school he served in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps as a member of the District of Columbia Air National Guard, and worked as a medical technician at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda. After his graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army, serving in La Roche, France, until the spring of 1955. Following his overseas deployment he served in the U. S. Army Reserves from April 1955 until September 1960. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal for his service. In his civilian life, Mr. Tripp became a certified public accountant and worked for Milliken & Company and as the Comptroller of Converse College, in Spartanburg. He was also an active member of the Institute of Management Accounting (IMA) for over 40 years. Mr. Tripp was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He is survived by his children, and many other loving members of his extended family and close friends. Visitation will be 10:00-10:45 AM Thursday, June 22, 2017, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Dale Rawlings, will follow at 11:00 AM in the Chapel, and committal with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307; and the Charles Lea Center-Residential Program, 195 Burdette Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
