Charles Neal, Jr.

Charles Cook Neal, Jr., 94, of 118 Briarwood Road, died Sunday, March 20, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born September 10, 1916, in Greensboro, NC, he was a son of the late Charles Cook Neal, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Smith Neal and husband of the late Moriet Louise Willeford Neal for 66 years. He retired in 1972 as a civilian civil engineer with the Department of Defense-US Air Force after 30 years of service, and was a US Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member for 71 years at First Baptist Church of Spartanburg, where he had worked in the Preschool Ministry and was a member of the Young at Heart. Charlie was a member of the Wofford College Terrier Club, the Spartanburg Touchdown Club, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees for 30 years. Survivors include two daughters, Charlene Neal Jones and husband Roland, and Kathy Neal Amick, all of Spartanburg; a grandson, Clarence "Rence" Roland Jones III and wife Caroline of Hilton Head, SC; two granddaughters, Jennifer Jones Hallenbeck and husband Brad, and Abby Amick Pretulak and husband Aaron, all of Spartanburg; five great-grandchildren, Claeland, Clark, Wilkes, Ellie, and Marianna; and a sister, Rose Marie Neal Reiger of Las Vegas, NV. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronnie Smith Neal, and a sister, Ruby Neal Mucklow. Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Robert C. Morgan. Visitation will follow the service at the graveside. Memorials may be made to the Wofford Terrier Club, 429 North Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
