Charles Edwin Herring

Charles Edwin Herring 95, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Charles was born on November 1, 1929, in Hartwell, Georgia, to the late Sidney and Guynelle Herring. Charles lived a life filled with purpose, love, and laughter.

Charles dedicated over 30 years of his professional life to the field of engineering, working diligently at Florida Power and Light in Fort Lauderdale, FL and retiring from Lockwood Greene in Spartanburg, SC. His commitment to his work was matched only by his devotion to his family and community. A proud graduate of Clemson University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, he carried his education and skills with pride throughout his career. In addition to his professional achievements, Charles served honorably in the United States Army, where he received an occupational medal in Germany.

Charles was a man of great humor and warmth. He was a beloved member of Southside Baptist Church, where he found solace and fellowship among friends who became like family. One of Charles's proudest accomplishments was his enduring marriage to his loving wife, Sara Nix Herring, with whom he spent an incredible 68 years. Their bond was a beautiful example of commitment, companionship, and unconditional love. Avidly interested in fishing, hunting, and reading, Charles embraced life’s simplicity and sought adventure in the great outdoors. Charles also loved spending time with his grandchildren and being active in all the activities they were involved in.

Charles is survived by his loving wife; Sara Nix Herring, two sons; David Herring (Tracy), and Randall Herring; two grandchildren; Adam Herring (Lauren), and Caitlin Monroe (Andrew), three great-grandchildren; Henry Herring, Penn Herring and Charlotte Monroe. Charles is preceded in death by his parents Sidney Herring and Guynelle Cleveland Herring, as well as his brother Ray Herring.

As we gather to honor and celebrate the remarkable life of Charles Edwin Herring, we invite family and friends to join us at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel located at 2075 East Main Street Spartanburg, SC 29307. A visitation will be held from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on December 3, 2024, followed by a funeral service from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM. The burial will be private.
