Charles Ray Glover, 84, of Spartanburg, died Tuesday, September 27, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. He was born February 24, 1927, in Spartanburg, a son of the late John Ralph Glover, Sr. and Ella Collins Glover. Mr. Glover was the owner of Glover Grocery Store, a neighborhood grocery store, and Mr. Food, a high volume convenience store. He was known throughout the area as someone who would help those who could not afford their groceries. He was also the former President of the South Carolina Food Retailers Association. A lifelong member of Liberty United Methodist Church, Ray was a Lay Leader and an active member on various Boards and Committees. He was a patient, three times a week, at the Dialysis Clinic on Dillon Drive since March 2002 and was very grateful for the staff that gave excellent care and love. A veteran of the U. S. Navy during World War II, he served on the USS Alfred A. Cunningham and enjoyed the reunions with his shipmates. In his later years, he became an organic gardener and took delight in giving away produce to family and friends. Survivors include his adoring wife of 64 years, Betty Israel Glover; daughter, Jan Glover Boehnlein and husband Bruce of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Emily Fulp of Holly Ridge, NC, and Andrew Glover Boehnlein of Atlanta, GA; sisters, Elizabeth Pitts and Lil Stevens, both of Spartanburg; and brother, Jack Glover of Lancaster, SC. He was predeceased by brothers, Robert, Arthur Earl, and George Marvin Glover. Visitation will be 3:00-3:45 PM Saturday, October 1, 2011, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM, in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Brian Arant. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
