Charles Eugene Gibbs, 80, was called home to his Lord after a short illness. Born April 18, 1936 in Spartanburg, SC, he was raised by his loving mother, Ethel Schultz Gibbs McIntyre. In 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Jo Hallman. On October 25, 2016, they would have celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. Eugene retired from Jackson Mills. After retirement, he took great joy in growing dahlias and was a member of the Dahlia Society. He won many awards for his dahlias and made many friends who he and Nancy enjoyed sharing their love of dahlias with. He also loved to birdwatch, as there were always bird feeders outside his window - hummingbirds were a favorite. For many years, he was an active member of Evangel Cathedral. In later years, he was a member of GraceWay, which is now Hope Church of Spartanburg. He was also a Mason and a Shriner. Survivors include his loving wife, Nancy of White Oak Estates; daughter, Debbie Wright (Gene); grandsons, Kyle Wright (Neely) and Taylor Wright (girlfriend, Kasey); son in law, Steve Coggins; and sister in law, Barbara Gibbs; nieces and nephews, Joe, Lisa, Michael, Lynn and their perspective families. He was predeceased by daughter, Teresa Coggins; and a brother, Joe Gibbs. Visitation will be 12:00 - 12:45 PM Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral service will be 1:00 PM in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jan King. Entombment will follow in Greenlawn Heritage Chapel Mausoleum, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307. The family would like to thank Eugene and Nancy's close friends, Anna and Donnie Webb who are like family and a great help through their declining health journey with unconditional love and support. They would also like to extend a special thanks to their friend and pastor, the Rev. Jan King, as well as, many other friends who visited frequently and helped when needed. We appreciate all the care given by the staff at White Oak Estates and the staff from Hospice of South Carolina.
