Charles Franklin Funk, 76, of Spartanburg, entered a new life with Christ on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. He was born on August 22, 1936, in Rock Hill, SC. He was the son of the late Charles Mae Funk and Sadie Gardner Funk. His beloved wife of 53 years is Vivian Williams Funk. Charles received his BSME (1958) and MSME (1965) Degrees from Clemson University. He was a Professional Mechanical Engineer previously employed with Lockwood Greene Engineers. After retiring from Lockwood Greene, he formed a private consulting firm where he continued to practice engineering. More recently, he enjoyed the facility design work at Wofford College and especially the people this allowed him to meet. He was a member of First Baptist Church where in past years he lovingly served as a deacon and various committees including Building and Grounds among others. He enjoyed meeting new friends, welcoming members and guests to church as he served as a morning greeter. He had a strong passion for children and thoroughly enjoyed his service in the nursery. He was happiest with a child on both knees and a third looking for a spot. He was deeply committed to the Boy Scouts. As an Eagle Scout himself, he was especially proud when his sons and grandson followed him in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. He had a special love for people. This included his many friends at church, Wofford College, Lockwood Greene, YMCA, and most recently his caregivers at Mary Black Hospital and Regional Hospice House among many others. He never met a stranger and always seemed to have a way to touch others. Some of the ways he expressed his love for his country and community were in serving on the Board of Directors of the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium during renovation, Glenn Springs Academy and YMCA. He believed it was a privilege to serve others. His special interests included spending time with his grandchildren. He had a love for reading, especially history. He was passionate about our country and the ideals upon which it was founded. He enjoyed and appreciated God's beautiful creation. Other survivors include his beloved sons, Charles Robert Funk (Susan) and Arthur Christopher Funk (Diane); grandchildren, Christopher Ronald Funk, Kathryn Elizabeth Funk, Merideth Diane Funk, Julia Ann Funk, and Claire Elisabeth Funk, all of Spartanburg, SC. He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Ann Ayers. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.
