Charles Fretwell Ii

September 6, 1957 — January 9, 2023

Charles Burlington Fretwell II, of Boiling Springs, SC, met his precious Lord and Savior face to face on Monday morning, January 9, 2023, at the age of 65.

Charles is the much loved, cherished soulmate of his wife Leslie Schmitt Fretwell. They met at the Waffle House on May 11, 2005 then married April 2, 2006 and have been inseparable since then.

A native of Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of Alonzo Alexander Fretwell Sr. and Louise Williamson Fretwell.

Charles began his work life at Spartan Grain and Mill Company, his family’s business. His experience at Spartan Grain led Charles to many successful entrepreneurial ventures.

Charles was a down to earth, intelligent Renaissance man with many talents and hobbies. In addition to being a pilot and flight instructor, Charles built his own two seater RV 7 airplane with the inaugural flight August 8, 2021 at the Shelby, NC Airport. He loved fishing and was always in search of the largest catfish. Charles won many barbecue state championships including the North Carolina Blue Ridge Barbecue Championship three times. He was a master square dancer, clogger and banjo player. He shot skeet and trap competitively. He was a master welder. If it had an engine, Charles drove it, rode it or flew it; and, he could fix it.

Charles is survived by his loving wife Leslie and his siblings, Susan A. Fretwell of Spartanburg and Alonzo A. Fretwell, Jr. of Joshua Tree, CA.

The funeral service will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, P.O. Box 430, Drayton, SC 29333 or to the charity of one’s choice.

Leslie is very appreciative of Hospice Nurse Jessica for her excellent care of Charles; dearest friends, Angie Horton Ponder, Rachel Smith Yelton and Christine for running errands, picking up medicines, spiritual support, prayers and hugs, and just being there; sister Susan for picking up medicines, bringing in meals and prayers; cousin Derrick for his visits, prayers and hugs, and spiritual support.
