Charles "Dean" Sr.

Charles Dean Turner Sr., 79, of Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at his home. Born May 20, 1938, in High Shoals, NC, he was the son of the late Arnold Robert Turner and Willie Sue Early Turner. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Dean graduated from Tri-High in NC and Western Carolina University where he excelled in football and the classroom, winning the BYRD Scholarship Award as the top scholar athlete at the University. He did undergraduate work at Gardner-Webb University. He began his career at Security Finance Corporation in 1961. After 33 years employment he retired as company president. Through the years, Dean enjoyed golfing, boating and fishing, both in Florida and the mountains of NC. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Kitty Tracy and her team of caregivers for the loving care they gave Dean during his last months. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sandra Gray Turner; children, Charles Dean Turner Jr. (Holly) of Spartanburg, SC, Jennifer Turner Henry of Greensboro, NC, and David Gray Turner of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Catharine Gula (Peter), Clayton, Ian, Emory, Jordon, Rebekah Shutt (Philip), and Kaita; sisters, Francis Robinson (Bill) of Mauldin, SC and Carolyn Jones (Paul) of Martinsville, VA; and brother, Steve Turner of Henrietta, NC. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers and sister, Festus Turner, Richard Turner, Barbara Edwards, and Bob Turner. The family will receive friends 6:00-8:00 PM Friday, March 23, 2018, at the home. A service honoring his memory will be conducted at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 309 Fernwood Dr., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by The Rev. Dr. Paul Petersen and The Rev. Dale Rawlings. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Spartanburg Lions Club, PO Box 647, Spartanburg, SC 29304; or a charity of one's choice.
