Charles Bishop

Charles Berlin "Sonny" Bishop, 85, of Cowpens, SC, passed away peacefully at the Hospice Home on Friday, January 1, 2016, after a short illness. Born September 5, 1930, in Cowpens, SC, he was the son of the late William Madison "Bill" and Rosa Lee Gossett Bishop and husband of the late Mary Lou Threadgill Bishop for 56 years. Mr. Bishop was a Marine veteran who served four years as a Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps. and was asked to serve two more years to train troops for the Korean War. He got his start early in life by shining shoes at a barber shop. He later became a barber and opened his business, Bishop's Barber Shop in Cowpens, SC, where he worked until the age of 82, before retiring. In high school, he excelled on the basketball team and also played on the baseball team. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Cowpens. Survivors include his daughter, Tena Bishop Scales of the home; granddaughter, Kristin Doggett (Chris) of Gaffney, SC; and great granddaughters, Madison and Natalie Doggett. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son, Charles Jeffrey "Jeff" Bishop, a sister, Vivian Gustine, brothers, S.A. Bishop, Pat Bishop, and Harry Bishop, whom died in childhood. Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM Monday, January 4, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at First Baptist Church of Cowpens, 108 W. Church Street, Cowpens, SC 29330, conducted by the Rev. Randy Bishop and the Rev. Bill Westafer. Burial will follow in Daniel Morgan Memorial Gardens, 175 Cemetery Street, Cowpens, SC 29330. Memorials may be made to Mobile Meals Service, P.O. Box 461, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
