Cecil Moore

May 12, 1936 — December 20, 2016

Cecil Connor "Buddy" Moore, 80, of Spartanburg, SC, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, at his home. Born May 12, 1936, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Cecil Ray Moore and Mary Ellen Thompson Moore. Always a hard worker, his many jobs during his school days ranged from helping his father on a bread truck delivery route all summer to delivering newspapers on a bicycle. He also worked in the meat department in a grocery store and sold peanuts at the Phillies ballgames at Duncan Park at night, along with many chores at home to include grass cutting, pruning hedge, milking the cow, etc. He accomplished his goal of purchasing his own first car -- a '40 Ford coupe. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1954. His first fulltime employment was with Vernon Rowland's Service Station and later with Spartanburg Water Works. He served six months active duty with the South Carolina National Guard and a number of years on inactive duty. Thereafter, J. C. Gowan and he formed a partnership, Gowan & Moore Builders, remodeling and building many homes in the Roebuck, Pauline, and Lake Bowen areas. He was a member of Routh Memorial Presbyterian Church until its closure at which time he joined White Stone United Methodist Church where he was instrumental in flooring and remodeling the White Stone Grammar School building that was purchased by the church to be used for church functions. He was a member of Croft Ruritan Club for a number of years. His hobbies included cooking and gardening (having been taught this skill by his grandmother, "Big Mama"), rabbit hunting, coon hunting, fishing and woodworking. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jeanette "Jennie" Sprouse Moore of the home; one son, Jeffrey Connor Moore of Spartanburg, SC; two sisters, Carol Moore Smith of Spartanburg, SC and Claudette Moore Linder of Taylors, SC; "adopted son", Stewart Cook; a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins; and his favorite cat, "Tik". Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307.
