Cecil Lands

February 24, 1921 — December 25, 2010

Walter Cecil Lands, 89, passed away Saturday, December 25, 2010, at White Oak Estates. Born February 24, 1921 in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Walter Lee and Mamie Hurst Lands. Cecil felt honored to have served his country in World War II, with the famous Second Armored Division "Hell on Wheels". He was wounded in Germany for which he received the Purple Heart, but recovered in time to participate in the Battle of the Bulge, advancing on through Germany and was a member of the first American unit to enter Berlin. After the war, he worked for Reeves Brothers, retiring in 1986 after 35 years of service. Following retirement he enjoyed golf and his yard. Cecil was a member of Bethany Primitive Baptist Church in Suwanee, GA, and a lifetime member of Sertoma International. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Harrison Lands; one sister, Virginia Lands Snelgrove and her husband Wilbur of Spartanburg; his brother-in-law, Dr. John Robert Harrison and his wife Charlyne of Atlanta, GA; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ethel Colyer of Spartanburg and Mrs. Betty Harrison of Brevard, NC; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Hazel Lands Young of Spartanburg; and one brother, John E. Lands of Huntsville, AL. Visitation will be 12:00-12:45 p.m. Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel, conducted by Elder Gus Harter. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be David Snelgrove, Jack Snelgrove, Alex Corbitt, Andrew Corbitt, John Robert Harrison, III, William Harrison, Bradley Kolowich, and Jonathan Kolowich. The family is at the home.
