Catherine Hoot Monaghan

Catherine Hoot Monaghan, 92, of Spartanburg, passed away on Wednesday morning, April 3, 2024, at her residence. Catherine was born on May 22, 1931, in Pennsville, NJ, a daughter of the late Marguerite Kehnast Hoot and Thomas White Hoot. She was married to Robert Thomas Monaghan, Sr. for over 71 years. 

Catherine enjoyed travel, reading, and water aerobics which she attributed to her long life. She devoted her time, love, and attention to her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She made all holidays and birthdays a celebration of fun and family and thus was called “Happy” by her family. 

Along with her husband, Catherine is survived by her daughter, Margaret Ann “Peg/Meg” Monaghan of Simpsonville; her sons, Robert Thomas “Monk” Monaghan, Jr. (Suzanne) of Rock Hill, SC, Thomas “Tom” William Monaghan (Catharine) of Greer, and James “Jim” Christopher Monaghan (Connie) of Moore; her 6 grandchildren, James Christopher “Chris” Monaghan, Jr (Rebecca), Charles “Chase” Robert Monaghan (Kelly), Phillip Robert Thomson (Kelsey), Kevin James Thomson, Madeline “Maddy” Monaghan Stevens, and Caroline Marie Monaghan; and 8 great-grandchildren, Riley Fordham, Brayden Monaghan, Rowen Monaghan, Liam Monaghan, Mosley Monaghan, Grace Monaghan, Hattie Thomson, and Ellyn Stevens. Catherine was predeceased by her brother, Thomas W. Hoot, Jr. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 290 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, conducted by the Rev. David Whitman. Entombment of Catherine’s urn will follow in the Church Columbarium. The family will receive friends following the entombment in the Church Parish Center. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health, c/o Spartanburg Regional Foundation, 1692 Skylyn Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29307.
