Carroll Jacob Black, 89, of Spartanburg, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born March, 21, 1920, in Lexington County, SC, he was the son of the late Jessie David and Mary Alice Koon Black and husband of the late Eva Hall Black. He was retired from Startex Mills, an active member of Southside Baptist Church, and a U.S. Army Staff Sgt. with the 63rd Infantry serving in World War II. Survivors include two sons, Jerry J. Black of Brownsville, TX, and Larry J. Black of Marietta, GA; three grandsons, Jonathan Todd Black, Randy Alan Burgess, and Mark Sanders Burgess, all of Spartanburg; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn B. Burgess; two brothers, Willie Black and Horace Black; and two sisters, Rosa Mae Black Farr and Jessie Black Burbage. Visitation will be 1:00-1:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. David M. Blanton. Burial with military rites by the SC State Guard Honors Team will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Southside Baptist Church, 316 South Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306. The family is at their respective homes.
