Carl Maxwell Huffman, Jr., 87, beloved husband and father, passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2010 at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, after a three year courageous battle with cancer. Carl was born September 8, 1923 in Burlington, NC, the son of the late Carl Maxwell Huffman, Sr. and Elma McVey Huffman. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Mildred Bishop Huffman; two daughters, Rosalind Huffman of Spartanburg, SC and Mary Cynthia Huffman (Greg) Woods of Woodruff, SC; two sons, Larry Carl (Debbie) Huffman of Chesnee, SC and Richard Paul Huffman of Spartanburg, SC; two grandchildren, Stephanie Huffman of Woodruff, SC and Jacob Huffman of Scottsdale, AZ; a brother, Donald Tysor (Merle) Huffman of Elon, NC; brothers-in-law, Dr. Charles Edwin Bishop of Durham, NC and Elbert Earl Bishop of Concord, NC; nephews, Rev. David (Elaine) Huffman of Raleigh, NC, Steve (Nadia) Bishop of Charlotte, NC, Lynn (Sharon) Bishop of Concord, NC, Charles E. (Carol) Bishop, Jr. of Armonk, NY; nieces, Cathy (Mike) Bullard of Elon, NC, Susan (Dr. Steve) Bolick of Raleigh, NC, Patricia (Tracy) Law of Apex, NC, Sue (Dr. Tilt) Thompkins of Weaverville, NC, Cathy (Rev. Al) Thorne of Colonial Heights, VA, and Alice (Jeff) Moody of Kannapolis, NC. Carl was a gentle spirit and a man of strong character. He valued his faith, his service, and his family. He loved and appreciated great literature and the performing arts. Although a private person, many were touched by his quiet strength. Carl graduated Burlington High School, Burlington, NC in 1940, where he played trumpet and French horn in the band and was a member of the National Honor Society. He was awarded an academic scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he worked in the library and was selected by the library committee to serve as esteemed Head of the Federal Documents department. He was, also, an active member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. In the middle of his junior year, he was called to serve in the United States Army during World War II. Successful testing resulted in Carl being selected for Army specialized training in medics, basic engineering, and pre-dental. Upon discharge, he returned to UNC and completed his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce in 1947. After graduation, he attended dental school at the University of Pennsylvania. He and his family relocated to Spartanburg, SC in 1959 and his career as an accountant ended with his retirement from First State Savings and Loan. Carl was an active member of First Baptist North Spartanburg and the Upward Bound Sunday School class, where he served as Treasurer for many years. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 9, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel in Spartanburg, SC. Officiating will be the Rev. Al Phillips and special friend, Richard Chapman. Burial at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens will immediately follow the service. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Friday evening, October 8, 2010 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel in Spartanburg, SC.
