Capt. John David Hortman, U. S. Army, 30, of Clarksville, TN, formerly of Spartanburg, died Monday, August 8, 2011, in Fort Benning, GA. Born May 6, 1981, in Spartanburg, SC, he was the son of Brenda Touchton Jones of Inman and the late John Wilmer Hortman. Capt. Hortman, U. S. Army, Company B, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Kentucky received the following awards: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Posthumous), Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (3 Bronze Service Stars), Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Combat Action Badge, Basic Army Aviator Badge, Parachutist Badge (Basic), 2 Overseas Service Bars. A graduate of Byrnes High School in 1999 he was the student body president. During his high school tenure, he was selected to attend Palmetto Boys State, where he was elected as lieutenant governor and selected to represent the 1998 class at Boys Nation. During this time, he was appointed secretary of state, and has since then served on the Boys State staff. He earned a history degree in 2004 from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point. In addition to his mother Brenda Jones, survivors include his step-father, Ken Jones of Inman; sisters, Jill Hortman Morris and husband Mark of Colorado Springs, CO; Cheryl English and husband Ed of Peachtree City, GA, and Rhonda Qualls and husband Gary of Chapel Hill, NC; brother, Andy Pierce and wife Robin of Gardner, KS; step-sisters, Megan Jones and Jessica Jones of Spartanburg; nieces, Makenna Morris, Skylar Pierce, McKenzie Pierce, and Brezny Qualls; nephews, Madison and Randall English, and Jordan Qualls. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, August 20, 2011, in First Baptist Church of Spartanburg. Visitation will follow in the church Welcome Center. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
