Buford Boyce Parris, of 15 Britton Street, died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. A native of Campobello, SC, he was the son of the late Boyce Lee and Molly Owens Parris. He was retired from Spartanburg Regional Medical Center and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church where he was a member of the Love Sunday School Class. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he served in the Southwest Pacific, Philippines, New Guinea, Marshall Islands, and Japan, and received several medals. He wrote many gospel songs, some published and recorded by various artists, and was a gospel DJ on WKDY for many years. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Joyce Tennyson Parris; a daughter, Angela Parris of Spartanburg; a son, Doug "Jesse" Parris and his wife Joan of Stamford, CT; two grandsons, Todd Parris and Tony Parris, both of Spartanburg; two brothers, Rev. Talmadge Parris and his wife Bessie of Greer, and Howard Parris and his wife Betty of Inman; and a sister, Eva Laughter of Inman. He was predeceased by a son, Cecil Buford. Visitation will be 12:00-12:45 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2009, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel conducted by the Rev. Mike Royal, the Rev. Gerald Burnett, and the Rev. Danny Cannon. Burial with military rites will be in Sunset Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Eastside Baptist Church, Special Needs Fund, 1850 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Spartanburg, SC 29307; or to the Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
